The Various Ways to Relive Sciatica Pain

Do you often notice lower back, leg and buttocks pain? When you do, does the pain worsen when you sit or walk? If you answer "yes" to both of these questions, you are not merely experiencing typical muscle pain due to physical fatigue or old age. You are probably suffering from the condition known as sciatica.

Sciatica is the condition wherein the patient normally experiences pain associated with numbness and tingling on the lower back. The pain may stretch all the way down to the buttocks and thighs, as well as the legs. Sciatica is said to result from the irritation or inflammation of the root nerve called sciatic nerve.

The experience that sciatica patients suffer from differs widely. Some patients would only complain about mild pains while to some, the suffering may be too severe to the extent that they can no longer perform usual daily tasks and activities properly. Since sciatica is manifested through different symptoms, different treatments are also available. But in general, sciatica pain can be relived through proper exercise. Aerobic exercises as well as particular exercises that target the lower back muscles, buttocks and legs are known to help reduce sciatic pain. In fact, a lot of health and fitness experts have already designed physical therapy routines and plans directed towards the relief of sciatica and eventually, the correction of the patients' posture and promotion of a healthy stature. These physical therapy routines normally include stretching and strengthening exercises as well as low-impact aerobic routines. Aside from working out, there are other non-intrusive treatments that sciatica patients may choose for their relief.

For worse and more serious cases, medical professionals may suggest for the patient to undergo surgery. This is known to provide optimal sciatica relief. This is because when the sciatica pain gets more painful than normal, it is possible that there is a more serious reason behind it such as disc herniation. Normally, doctors would recommend up to two surgeries depending on the cause, severity and duration of the sciatica. The most popular surgery performed to relieve sciatica is known as microdisectomy. With this procedure, the part of the disc that affects the sciatic nerve is removed. Meanwhile, if the sciatica is caused by lumbar spinal stenosis, the procedure lumbar laminectomy is performed. In this surgery, the bone or disc that affects the nerve root is being removed.

Although patients of sciatica can opt for surgery in order for them to ensure permanent relief, this is completely optional. It is totally up to the patient if he or she wants to undergo a surgery. If the patient's living conditions are already affected by sciatica, then surgical procedures might be the best option there is.
